Introduction

The Air & Waste Management Association is a not-for-profit technical and educational organization with 14,000 members in 65 countries. Founded in 1907, the Association provides a neutral forum where all viewpoints of a environmental management issue (technical, scientific, economic, social, political ad public health) receive equal consideration.

This worldwide network represents may disciplines: physical and social sciences, health and medicine, engineering, law and management. The Association attracts decision makers from government agencies, industry and the academic and research communities who want to exchange technical and managerial information about air pollution control and waste management. The Association serves its members and the public by promoting environmental responsibility and providing technical and managerial leadership in the fields of air and waste management. Dedication to these objectives enables the Association to work toward its goal: a cleaner environment.

Through the Association, environmental management professionals develop technical expertise, management skills and familiarity with all sides of environmental issues. Members learn about technical advances in environmental control, trends in the profession and the probable effect of each on their work.

The Association's roots go back to 1891 when citizens in Chicago formed the Society for the Prevention of Smoke. Throughout its history, the Association changed its name to adequately reflect the members' interests: from the International Association for the Prevention of Smoke to Smoke Prevention Association of America in 1915 and then the Air Pollution Control Association in 1950. The most recent change occurred in September, 1988 when the members renamed it the Air & Waste Management Association.

The Association's technical scope currently encompasses four areas: air pollution control, environmental management, waste processing and control and pollution prevention. Through its structure, programs and activities, the Association integrates these four areas to produce opportunities for technical exchange that are multi-industry, multi-disciplinary and multi-media in nature.

Members plan, develop and present programs that are designed to exchange information, enhance skills and knowledge and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of environmental managers.

The Association's main support and administrative offices are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Association also maintains a Canadian support office in Ottawa, Ontario. Any questions about the Association, its members, programs or activities can be answered by the Staff:
