Environmental Management Group Mission Statement

The Environmental Management Group identifies and quantifies air pollutants and waste generated contaminants and assesses their environmental impacts on human health, welfare, and the natural environment. The EM Group also identifies available control technologies and promotes the development of new methods and pollution prevention approaches to reduce air pollutants and wastes to acceptable limits. It develops institutional and administrative procedures to promote the utilization of control technology and pollution prevention measures for reducing air and waste pollutants, environmental quality and compliance auditing, sustainable global development, and the utilization of information management solutions/systems. It also creates opportunities for information exchange of research, measurements, methods, experiences/solutions, regulatory affairs (laws, regulations, criteria, and guidance), public outreach, ethics training, and enhanced environmental stewardship.

The Environmental Management Group through the activities of its Divisions (Effects, Industrial Processes, Program Administration, Pollution Prevention and Sustainability, and Transportation):

  • Promotes understanding of scientific, technical, socio-economical, and regulatory issues related to the practice of environmental management and enhanced stewardship;
  • Evaluates research and development related to health and exposure, ecological, risk assessment/management, and odors;
  • Provides scientific/engineering/technical forums for the environmental professional related to research and development, review and discussion of environmental policies/issues, program administration and challenges, environmental quality and regulatory implementation, compliance auditing and management procedures and information systems;
  • Reviews the state of the art related to technology and environmental management and business practices for enhanced stewardship and sustained environmental quality;
  • Encourages technology transfer of information, experiences and solutions to increase awareness, use and development of innovative methods related to effects and risks, industrial processes/facilities, policies and regulations, land use, permitting and siting, public participation, economics, transportation issues (sources, systems, and infrastructures), pollution prevention, and global sustainable development;
  • Enhances environmental knowledge, providing the basis for making quality environmental management decisions for the benefit of the Association's members, environmental community, and society at large.

The activities of the Environmental Management Group compliment those of the Air Group and the Waste Group.

This committee plans and executes programs to enhance the biological and health oriented skills needed for the objective evaluation of the effect of environmental pollution on man.

EE-5 (Risk Assessment/Management Committee)

This committee provides a forum for exploring technology and application of risk analysis in environmental management.

EE-6 (Odors Committee)

This committee stimulates research and development on the various aspects of odorous pollution, its measurement, control, and regulation.

EE-7 (Homeland & Environmental Security Committee)

This committee provides a forum for understanding the policies, procedures and regulations associated with security and vulnerability of manufacturing facilities.  In this context, we are primarily focused on issues associated with outside risk.

EI-1 (Federal Facilities Committee)

The purpose of this committee is to provide a forum for regulated federal facilities to exchange information, experiences, and solutions regarding air quality, waste, environmental management and compliance issues/problems affecting federal facilities. This committee fosters awareness of issues and promotes/sponsors technical sessions at the annual meeting and specialty conferences concerning federal facilities and supports fulfillment of the role of being good stewards for the environment.

EI-2 (Power Generation Committee)

The purpose of this committee is to promote within the Association and disseminate to the technical community at large, an awareness of the engineering, environmental/policy and energy issues associated with power generation. To exchange information and develop expertise to assist the power generation industry in complying with all environmental laws, regulations, criteria and guidelines.

EI-3 (Industrial Furnaces and Boilers Committee)

The purpose of this committee is to facilitate the exchange of information relative to emissions and solid wastes that result from industrial fossil fuel, biomass, and process waste combustion processes, and to disseminate information on appropriate control technologies for these processes.

EI-4 (Chemical/Petroleum Sources Committee)

This committee discusses specific problems and solutions and disseminates information on air emissions and waste management as it relates to the chemical and petroleum industries. The committee provides a forum for exchanging information, ideas, and experiences related to pollution prevention and control issues in the chemical and petroleum industries from industrial academic, consulting, and regulatory perspectives.

EI-5 (Cement Lime & Non-metallic Mineral Processing Committee)

This committee provides a forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences related to pollution control and waste management and serves as the liaison between industry and the regulatory agencies.

EI-6 (Metal Industries Committee)

This committee sponsors programs on multimedia issues encompassing air quality control, waste management, and site remediation in the iron and steel industry.

EP-1 (Policy and Regulation Committee)

This committee provides a forum for comment on policy and regulations. It ensures that Association members have an input in policy development and management or regulations.

EP-3 (Legal/Liability Committee)

This committee fosters a better understanding of the relationship of law and technology relative to air pollution control and waste management.

EP-4 (Facility Permitting and Siting Committee)

This committee fosters on the issues surrounding the permitting and siting of waste management facilities. It fosters a climate of responsible public involvement in the decision-making process and is an available source of expertise and information for the technical community, regulatory agencies and the public at large.

EP-5 (Public Participation Committee)

This committee fosters programs that promote cooperative and effective participation by all of society's environmental stakeholders in environmental activities. This mission includes helping to bridge the communication gap between technical, scientific, and academic experts, and business owners/operators, community groups, media representatives, and members of the general public on air and waste management issues.

EP-8 (EHS Management Systems Committee)

This committee provides a forum to present and discuss environmental, health, and safety (EHS) auditing issues and inform association members of current and appropriate auditing practices, procedures, and concerns, and the future direction of EHS auditing, EHS management systems, and EHS compliance programs.
