Outreach

Sustaining interest in environmental careers and education is a key part of A&WMA’s commitment to its professional members. In 2010, outreach activities focus on assisting teachers and students in the Calgary area to develop a better understanding of the links between energy production, energy usage, and the environment.

2010 Science Poster Contest

The 2010 Science Poster Contest asks Calgary students in grades K-9 to submit posters related to the conference theme “Energy and Environment.” The contest is split into three levels: Earth Energy (fossil fuels, geothermal energy, biomass, etc.) for grades K-3; Water Energy (hydroelectricity, tidal power, wave power, etc.) for grades 4-6; and Air Energy (wind power, solar power, etc.) for grades 7-9. The winning entries will be displayed at ACE.

The contest is a collaboration between A&WMA, the Calgary Science Network, and the Calgary Region Airshed Zone.

High School Essay Contest

The 2010 High School Essay Contest, “Energy and the Environment: Changing Our Communities, Our Schools and Our World” gives students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to share their thoughts on the environment and to win a $400 prize. Students should choose ONE of the following subject areas as the focus of their essay: alternative fuels, greenhouse gas management, or fossil fuels. After selecting a subject area, students should discuss how this topic is changing the environment of their community, school, or a particular industry. Essays can be up to six pages in length and must be submitted to awmaessay@gmail.com by April 22, 2010.

Sharp’en Your Oral Presentation Skills

Practical Lessons on Leadership

Practical Lessons on Leadership – This half day workshop focuses on providing the young professional with practical leadership training for use in their personal, professional and volunteering life. What is it about some leaders that make them so magnetic and attractive that people are drawn to them? What are the keys to inspiring others to achieve more than they ever dreamed possible? A framework of skills and competencies is reviewed that should be at the core of every leader. The workshop includes lectures and interactive activities that will help the participants better understand leadership, themselves and others as well as provide tools for improving ones leadership skills. The workshop is presented by Jim Donnelly, QEP. Jim has more than 35 years of experience working in the fields of air pollution control, waste management, site remediation, health & safety and quality. He has held positions in engineering, technical and project management, research and development, as well as sales and training. He has been an active member of A&WMA for more than 33 years serving a Technical Coordinating Committee Chair, Technical Council Division Chair, Technical Council Waste Group Coordinator, Education Council Professional Development Division Chair and Vice Chair of the Golden West Section. Jim has taught a number of the Environmental Practices Review courses for A&WMA as well as a number of HSE workshops. He is also a past Board Member and Past President of the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice. Jim holds a BS (1971) in Chemistry and a MA in Leadership (2007). He is an avid fisherman, a former Marine, a black belt in Shotokan Karate and an MSHA instructor.
