Program Schedule

The ACE 2010 young professionals (YP) program offers opportunities to meet with A&WMA leadership and Board members, to network with peers and seasoned veterans alike, and to become involved with the new Young Professionals Advisory Council.

Young Professionals are defined by the Association as being 35 years of age or younger and working in the environmental profession.

YP and Student Tours

Mountain Equipment Co-op

Monday, June 21 • 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $5 USD, $5 CND

Take a tour of Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), Canada's leading supplier of quality climbing, watersport, cycling, snowsport, hiking, camping gear, and clothing.  MEC is a member-owned co-operative with a long-standing focus on ethical sourcing and extended producer responsibility.  MEC’s Calgary location is 100% wind powered and diverts 92% of its waste. City of Calgary Biocell Project

Friday, June 25 • 9:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m.
Cost: $10 USD, $10 CND

Visit the City of Calgary Biocell Project, Winner of the 2009 Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta’s (APEGGA) Environment and Sustainability Award, the Calgary Biocell Project is a leader in waste management planning. After waste is processed in the biocell, only 30% of the original mass will remain for ultimate disposal. Join your fellow professionals for a tour of the full-scale pilot facility which has a footprint of 85m x 85m and a maximum height of 15m. The cell contains 30,000 tonnes of residential solid waste and 25,000 tonnes of selected commercial waste.

Young Professional Advisory Council Annual Meeting

Tuesday, June 22 • 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

The Young Professional Advisory Council (YPAC) is a new Council created in 2009 to advise the A&WMA Board and other Councils regarding services and activities that will meet the needs of today’s young environmental professionals.  All YPs are invited to join YPAC for their annual meeting to hear about the YPAC's latest initiatives and to get involved with this exciting group.

Listen as a panel of YP leaders from government, industry, consulting, and non-government organizations share their career experiences. This panel will empower students with advice about the current job market, and provide other YP’s with suggestions for revitalizing their career paths.

YP/Student Social – The Vicious Circle

For the perfect way to end a busy day at ACE, join your fellow YPs and students for food and fun. The Vicious Circle is a funky lounge in the heart of downtown Calgary where you can play pool or relax on a comfy couch while admiring the creations of local artists. Honours and Awards Luncheon

Thursday, June 24 • 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.

A&WMA honours its YPs with two special awards at the annual Honours and Awards Luncheon. The Outstanding YP Award recognizes an individual or individuals who are pursuing excellence in their careers and have made a valuable contribution to A&WMA by serving in a leadership position. The YP Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper (or extended abstract) that has been primarily authored by a YP. Come support your colleagues as they are honoured at this luncheon.

One ticket to the luncheon is included with each full conference registration. Additional tickets can be purchased for $50 CND ($45 USD) on the conference registration form, or on-site.

Young Professional Best Paper Award

A&WMA will be presenting the Young Professional Best Paper Award, again in 2010. To be eligible for this award an individual must be: a young professional, defined by the Association as 35 years or younger and currently working in the environmental profession; self identified as a young professional during the initial abstract submission process; and the primary author of a paper (or extended abstract) which will be presented at ACE. Practical Lessons on Leadership

Practical Lessons on Leadership – This half day workshop focuses on providing the young professional with practical leadership training for use in their personal, professional and volunteering life. What is it about some leaders that make them so magnetic and attractive that people are drawn to them? What are the keys to inspiring others to achieve more than they ever dreamed possible? A framework of skills and competencies is reviewed that should be at the core of every leader. The workshop includes lectures and interactive activities that will help the participants better understand leadership, themselves and others as well as provide tools for improving ones leadership skills. The workshop is presented by Jim Donnelly, QEP. Jim has more than 35 years of experience working in the fields of air pollution control, waste management, site remediation, health & safety and quality. He has held positions in engineering, technical and project management, research and development, as well as sales and training. He has been an active member of A&WMA for more than 33 years serving a Technical Coordinating Committee Chair, Technical Council Division Chair, Technical Council Waste Group Coordinator, Education Council Professional Development Division Chair and Vice Chair of the Golden West Section. Jim has taught a number of the Environmental Practices Review courses for A&WMA as well as a number of HSE workshops. He is also a past Board Member and Past President of the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice. Jim holds a BS (1971) in Chemistry and a MA in Leadership (2007). He is an avid fisherman, a former Marine, a black belt in Shotokan Karate and an MSHA instructor.
