Student Program

For students focused on a career as an environmental professional, building a portfolio and a network of industry contacts is vital. A&WMA's 103rd Annual Conference & Exhibition provides a great opportunity for students to do just that, while also meeting both new and seasoned professionals and  participating in the global conversation on the environment.

Mountain Equipment Co-op

City of Calgary Biocell Project

Friday, June 25 • 9:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m.
Cost: $10 USD, $10 CND

Visit the City of Calgary Biocell Project, Winner of the 2009 Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta’s (APEGGA) Environment and Sustainability Award, the Calgary Biocell Project is a leader in waste management planning. After waste is processed in the biocell, only 30% of the original mass will remain for ultimate disposal. Join your fellow professionals for a tour of the full-scale pilot facility which has a footprint of 85m x 85m and a maximum height of 15m. The cell contains 30,000 tonnes of residential solid waste and 25,000 tonnes of selected commercial waste.

Students participating in the Student Poster Competition and the Environmental Challenge International (ECi) are invited to the Student Breakfast to meet and network with fellow students from around the world. Poster setup guidelines and ECi rules will be reviewed.

A&WMA’s Student Poster Competition recognizes student posters to be the best amongst those considered in the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral categories.

Visit the Exhibit Hall to watch as students present their posters to the judges during this year's competition. $8,500 in prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.

Career Panel Discussion: Energizing Your Environmental Career

Immediately following the Career Panel Discussion, students are invited to engage in speed networking with practicing professionals in varying environmental disciplines. Participants can learn more about different careers paths, and may have the opportunity to network with organizations looking to fill open positions.

YP/Student Social – The Vicious Circle

Student Awards Ceremony and Reception

The Student Awards Ceremony and Reception is open to all attending students. Prizes will be awarded for the Environment Challenge International, the Student Poster Contest, and the High School Essay Contest. A&WMA Scholarships, the Masters Thesis Award, the Doctoral Dissertation Award, the Platform Paper Award, and the Student Chapter Awards will also be presented. Judges for all student programs and student chapter faculty advisors are also welcome to attend.

Professional Development Courses

Practical Lessons on Leadership

Practical Lessons on Leadership – This half day workshop focuses on providing the young professional with practical leadership training for use in their personal, professional and volunteering life. What is it about some leaders that make them so magnetic and attractive that people are drawn to them? What are the keys to inspiring others to achieve more than they ever dreamed possible? A framework of skills and competencies is reviewed that should be at the core of every leader. The workshop includes lectures and interactive activities that will help the participants better understand leadership, themselves and others as well as provide tools for improving ones leadership skills. The workshop is presented by Jim Donnelly, QEP. Jim has more than 35 years of experience working in the fields of air pollution control, waste management, site remediation, health & safety and quality. He has held positions in engineering, technical and project management, research and development, as well as sales and training. He has been an active member of A&WMA for more than 33 years serving a Technical Coordinating Committee Chair, Technical Council Division Chair, Technical Council Waste Group Coordinator, Education Council Professional Development Division Chair and Vice Chair of the Golden West Section. Jim has taught a number of the Environmental Practices Review courses for A&WMA as well as a number of HSE workshops. He is also a past Board Member and Past President of the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice. Jim holds a BS (1971) in Chemistry and a MA in Leadership (2007). He is an avid fisherman, a former Marine, a black belt in Shotokan Karate and an MSHA instructor.
