Drake Landing Solar Community

Thursday, June 24• 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Cost: $25 USD, $25 CND
Take a tour of the first community in the world that is on track to fulfill 90% of each home’s space heating requirements from solar energy. The Drake Landing Solar Community in the Town of Okotoks, Alberta achieves reductions of approximately five tonnes of GHG emissions per home per year. Each of the 52 homes are heated by a district system designed to store abundant solar energy underground during the summer months and distribute the energy to each home for space heating needs during winter months. The second stop on the tour will be the Town Recycling Centre for an overview of the move to zero waste and their solar power generation system.

ENMAX Downtown District Energy Centre

Thursday, June 24 • 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
Cost: $25 USD, $25 CND
Visit the ENMAX Downtown District Energy Centre, a newly constructed heat generation facility located in the downtown core that is expected to provide heating to up to 10 million square feet of new and existing residential and commercial buildings. District Energy provides heating through a network of underground insulated pipes and is more efficient than traditional heating systems which have separate boiler systems built into every building. Over time the Downtown District Energy system will connect additional facilities and introduce “waste heat” recovery into the system from electrical generation facilities currently in the planning stages.
